Jay Foote completed the AmSAT-certified Alexander Technique Teacher training course with Ann Rodiger at the Balance Arts Center in New York City in 2013 and joined the faculty as an assistant in 2015. He has also studied with Anthony Kingsley, Jessica Wolf, Jean-Louis Rodrigue, Pedro de Alcantara, and Eva Karczag. In addition, he served as a member-at-large on the AmSAT Board of Directors from 2018-2020 and the AmSAT Research Committee from 2017-2020.
After moving to New York City and completing a Master's in Music at William Paterson University in Jazz Performance, he maintained an active performance schedule for 17 years, including Broadway’s Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, The Band’s Visit, and Waitress. In addition to national TV performances on Late Night with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, and Ellen, Foote toured and produced albums with many of New York/Nashville/LA’s finest musicians and songwriters.
Foote moved to Des Moines, Iowa, in the summer of 2020 and started Alexander Technique Des Moines, providing in-person lessons. He enjoys working with adults who are interested in refining their movements. He specializes in helping students cultivate flow to manage or eliminate pain and increase connection within the body, with the earth/gravity, to other people, and emotionally. Since 2023, as a mental health therapist at Seva Counseling in Des Moines, he has worked with his clients to help find more groundedness, balance, and embodiment, teaching them how to regulate their nervous systems.
He has presented Alexander Technique and mindfulness workshops for the Balance Arts Center’s Virtual Conference, students at the University of Northern Iowa String Festival, Iowa State University School of Music and Theater Departments, University of Iowa School of Social Work in Des Moines, Drake University Theater and Music Departments, Seva Counseling, Mind and Spirit Counseling, Capital Chiropractic, and the Employee and Family Resources Community Outreach Programs.
